HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Produces Musical "Tuya of the Shipyard," the Story of A Foreign Worker

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) is gaining attention by directly producing a musical that encapsulates the life experiences of foreign workers and local residents in Ulsan.

HHI announced that from the 14 to 22 of December, they are showcasing the human comedy musical "Tuya of the Shipyard" at the Hyundai Art Center's concert hall.

The production portrays the episodes of "Tuya," a foreign worker from the fictional country of "Langbakk," who dreams of the Korean Dream and gets a job at a shipbuilding company in Ulsan. Characters such as "Jichan," who disapproves of Tuya, "Yujin," the flower shop owner in Dong-gu, and Yujin's son, K-elementary school student "Youngsoo," also appear in the musical.

Especially noteworthy in this production is the human story that unfolds as Tuya, facing limitations and barriers as a foreigner, is on the verge of giving up everything to return to her hometown. However, upon meeting Youngsoo, a Korean child, they begin to understand and empathize with each other, leading to a positive transformation in Tuya's life in Korea.

HHI, which planned and produced the musical, explained that they hope this performance will serve as an opportunity to dispel prejudices and preconceptions about foreigners. To this end, they are supporting a total of 1,200 people, including employees of HD Hyundai affiliates and supplier companies in Ulsan, and local residents, to watch the musical for free.

HHI executives, including CEO Lee Sang-gyun and Noh Jin-yul, are also scheduled to attend the musical.

Through an invitation letter, HHI expressed their hope that the changes in Ulsan will now be made together with foreign workers, who are now our colleagues and family members. They expressed their wish for the musical to become a seed of change and new resolutions, turning discomfort into excitement.

In addition to this musical endeavor, HHI previously organized the "World Culture Festival" in October at Donggu Daewangam Park to provide an opportunity for foreign workers and local residents to understand and integrate each other's cultures. Furthermore, to assist foreign workers in adapting to life in Korea, HHI has been providing various support measures, including opening dedicated dormitories and publishing a guide for life in Korea in six languages.
