HD Hyundai Electric Signs MOU with Hitachi Energy for HVDC Business
On October 16, HD Hyundai Electric signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sweden’s Hitachi Energy — a global leader in the HVDC industry — to collaborate on HVDC technology development and localization.
The agreement aims to take the lead in the West Sea Energy Highway project and strengthen Korea’s HVDC industrial ecosystem, accelerating the establishment of domestic HVDC infrastructure. To achieve these goals, the two companies will jointly develop business models for HVDC projects and explore technology cooperation in line with the Korean government’s localization policy.
Aiming to successfully complete the 2GW demonstration project between Saemangeum and Seohwaseong by 2030, the participation of a highly reliable partner with proven system integration experience is essential. Through this partnership, HD Hyundai Electric plans to drive forward demonstration projects and boost its global competitiveness in the HVDC market, utilizing its new Ulsan factory as a dedicated production facility for HVDC transformers.
Hitachi Energy has supplied more than 70% of the world’s VSC HVDC systems and successfully completed Korea’s first VSC HVDC project between Wando and East Jeju in December last year. HD Hyundai Electric provided the high-voltage transformers for that project.
