HD Hyundai Oilbank Enhances Process Safety Management Skills with AI Technology

▶ Collaborates with Palantir to build a customized ‘Process Safety Management Learning Platform’
▶ Uses the learning platform to achieve the highest grade, ‘P grade’, in the ‘Process Safety Management Evaluation’
▶ "We will expand the use of AI technology for safe and efficient process operations."
HD Hyundai Oilbank is raising the level of process safety management for its employees through the establishment of an AI-powered learning platform.
In collaboration with Palantir, a global big data company, HD Hyundai Oilbank developed a customized process safety management learning platform called the ‘PSM(*) Skill-Up Chatbot’ to improve employees’ knowledge of process safety management and create a safer operational environment.
The ‘PSM Skill-Up Chatbot’ is based on Palantir’s AI large language model (LLM) platform, and was developed by the BAO(**) team, HD Hyundai Oilbank’s dedicated big data team, integrating process safety management regulations and internal data.
The ‘PSM Skill-Up Chatbot’ by HD Hyundai Oilbank supports effective learning in process safety management. It provides tailored questions on topics such as safety operation guidelines, equipment inspections and maintenance, and emergency response plans, based on the user’s job title, department, and responsibilities. Additionally, it uses AI technology to offer real-time evaluations and model answers for the responses entered by users.
By utilizing the self-developed ‘PSM Skill-Up Chatbot,’ HD Hyundai Oilbank has increased employee engagement and participation in process safety management training, which could otherwise be seen as dull. The platform provides employees with learning opportunities and mock interview evaluations without the limitations of time and space, earning high praise from employees. As a result, in November of last year, HD Hyundai Oilbank achieved the highest grade, ‘P grade,’ in the process safety management evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor for all processes. It is the only refinery in Korea to receive a ‘P grade’ across all processes.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor conducts a process safety management implementation status evaluation every four years, in accordance with Article 46 of the Industrial Safety and Health Act, to prevent major industrial accidents and strengthen the management and supervision of facilities that manufacture, handle, or store hazardous substances.
Meanwhile, HD Hyundai, to which HD Hyundai Oilbank belongs, continues its collaboration with Palantir in the digital fields, including AI and big data. In January of this year, at the ‘2025 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting (Davos Forum)’ in Davos, Switzerland, a promotional video by Palantir revealed the blueprint for the Future of Shipyard (FOS).
A representative from HD Hyundai Oilbank stated, “The development of this learning platform is significant as it has created a safe factory operation environment through AI technology.” They added, “We will continue to expand the use of AI technology for safe and efficient process operations in the future.”
