HD Hyundai Vice Chairman Presents Ways toward Decarbonized Future at Davos Forum

Chung Ki-sun, Vice Chairman and CEO of HD Hyundai

HD Hyundai Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun recently attended the 2024 World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland. Following the keynote speech at CES 2024 held in Las Vegas, USA last week, he has been actively engaging in global management since the beginning of the year.

HD Hyundai announced on January 17 that its Vice Chairman Chung attended the ‘Supply Chain & Transport Governors’ and ‘Oil & Gas Governors’ group at the Davos Forum in Switzerland to discuss decarbonization initiatives and cooperation measures. This is the second time for Chung to attend the Davos Forum since last year.

The Supply Chain & Transportation Governors is a group of CEOs from more than 20 leading global companies including A.P. Moeller Maersk, PSA International, Volvo, and DHL. During the meeting, CHUNG discussed ways to facilitate decarbonization and promote cooperation in the supply and transportation industry.

In particular, Chung met with Robert Maersk Uggla, Chairman of Maersk, to solidify mutual cooperation on eco-friendly ships. Last year, HD Hyundai Mipo, a shipbuilding affiliate of HD Hyundai, delivered the world’s first eco-friendly methanol-powered container carrier ordered by Maersk.

The Oil & Gas Governors discussed ways to mutually cooperate for decarbonization as well as practical measures to implement the action plan to cut the greenhouse gas agreed upon at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28). The Governors group was attended by about 30 global energy companies, including Shell, TotalEnergies, Petronas, and Trafigura.

At CES 2024 held in Las Vegas, U.S. last week, Vice Chairman Chung also emphasized decarbonization through his keynote speech, saying “We will build a hydrogen energy ecosystem that encompasses the entire planet from sea to land, and create a decarbonized global energy value chain for our future.”

In addition, Chung met with Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir Technologies, an American big data company that has been working with HD Hyundai since 2022, to discuss future cooperation. HD Hyundai is currently working on building an AI-based smart shipyard with Palantir and in December 2023, it announced the completion of the first phase of its smart shipyard project Future of Shipyard (FOS).
