HD Hyundai Oilbank Supplies Korea’s First Engine Oil for Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines

▶ Completed development and performance verification in 2025, with first supply this year to commercial vehicle manufacturers including Tata Daewoo

▶ Features three proprietary core technologies: engine protection, moisture control, and deposit suppression

▶ “We will continue expanding high-value-added lubrication solutions to proactively respond to changes in the future mobility market”

HD Hyundai Oilbank has entered the hydrogen mobility lubricant market by developing Korea’s first engine oil specifically designed for hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2-ICE) and supplying it to commercial vehicle manufacturers.

HD Hyundai Oilbank announced on Tuesday, November 11, that it recently became the first company in Korea to supply its XTeer H2-ICE (Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine) engine oil to hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle manufacturers, including Tata Daewoo.

HD Hyundai Oilbank began developing lubricant technologies for hydrogen internal combustion engines in 2023 and completed both product development and performance verification last year using its proprietary technologies.

Compared with conventional internal combustion engines, hydrogen internal combustion engines operate at higher combustion temperatures and can experience increased engine wear and lubricant performance degradation due to moisture generated during the combustion process. To address these characteristics, HD Hyundai Oilbank independently developed three core technologies: engine protection technology, moisture control technology, and deposit suppression technology.

Alongside electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, hydrogen internal combustion engines are gaining attention as an eco-friendly powertrain capable of replacing diesel engines in commercial vehicles and heavy transportation equipment. Their ability to leverage existing internal combustion engine manufacturing infrastructure and their shorter refueling times are expected to support broader adoption across the global commercial vehicle market.

An HD Hyundai Oilbank official said, “Through our independent research and development efforts, we have secured proprietary lubricant technology for hydrogen internal combustion engines and successfully entered the commercialization stage. We will continue to expand our portfolio of high-value-added lubrication solutions targeting global markets and proactively respond to evolving demands in the future mobility sector.”

Meanwhile, HD Hyundai is expanding the development of hydrogen engines and related technologies, including plans announced by HD Construction Equipment to mass-produce hydrogen engines for trucks. In line with these efforts, HD Hyundai Oilbank is strengthening its lubricant portfolio to serve conventional internal combustion engines, hydrogen internal combustion engines, and electric vehicles.
